Common Mistakes When Learning How To Play Basketball

When you are learning something, or picking up a new skill for the very first time, it is understandable that you will make mistakes. Making mistakes is one of the best ways of growing your skills, because you not only know what to do, but also what NOT to do.

If you are thinking about picking up basketball, or you are already playing and want to lift your level of play to the next level, then you need to be aware of some of the common mistakes. Some of them are pretty obvious, while others you may not even realize you are making until now.

So, have a read on below at some of the common mistakes you may make when learning how to play basketball.

Not Securing The Ball Properly

There are lots of things that are going on in a basketball game at any given moment. Therefore, you can be excused to be thinking about your next move before you have properly secured the ball. But it is important for you to take as much time as you can to ensure you have the ball in your grasp before acting on your next move.

If you don’t have the ball in your hands properly, it can result in a turnover, or you could easily lose the ball. These are things that you obviously don’t want to happen, but these are mistakes that even the best of the best make. So, the tip here is just to slow down (as much as you can) and take it one step at a time.

Not Taking Footwork Seriously

Your footwork is probably the most important thing to take note of. While you are already using footwork in your basketball game, it may need improvement. Your footwork is something that you actually need to work on, so you can’t ignore it, or think you don’t need to improve in this area.

When it comes to basketball, your whole body needs to be in sync, which includes your feet. So make sure you do some specific exercises that work on improving your coordination with your feet. You don’t want to get tangled up in your feet and trip over on the court now do you!

Dribbling Too High

No matter how long you’ve been playing basketball, it is always a good idea to go back to the basics, and make sure you aren’t making the simplest of mistakes. Dribbling is probably the first thing you learn how to do properly when playing basketball. But overtime, you can let mistakes creep into your technique and this can have a detrimental impact on your overall performance.

One of the things you need to look at when it comes to dribbling, is if you are dribbling the ball too high. The higher you dribble the ball, the less amount of control you will likely have. When you don’t have as much control of the ball, things like turnovers can happen.

Shooting with Rigid Body

It is important that when you are going to shoot the ball, that your body is as relaxed as possible. This means that you should avoid shooting with straight legs. When your body is rigid, this is where the lack of accuracy creeps in, and you could see yourself missing the shot more often than not.

There are many techniques you can incorporate into your game when it comes to shooting. You should have a look online at some of the different ones, and see which one works best for you, then keep practicing it until it feels comfortable.
